Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology
J. Jeffrey Andrews, M.D.
R. Brian Smith Endowed Professor
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (UTHSCSA). In my 8th year as Chair, I am more enthusiastic than ever about the present and future of our Department. In meeting our missions of teaching, clinical service, and research, we are training some of the finest anesthesiologists in the world, and providing outstanding patient care, and engaging in cutting-edge research.
We currently have 55 residents in our 4-year program. We filled our 2014 entering class on Match Day with 14 outstanding candidates whose average USMLE Part I score is 235 and average Part II score is 239. Our 50+ faculty members are fully committed to providing every learning opportunity for our residents, and that is reflected in the statistics as well. For the most recent 5-year reporting period, 95% of our graduates are board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). Our first-time pass rate on the ABA Written (Part I) exam is also 95% for the 5-year average. This year in 2014, we had a 100% pass rate on the ABA written examination, and we are justifiably proud of this. Our core program as well as our fellowships in Pain Medicine and Critical Care Medicine have attained a 10-year resurvey cycle from the ACGME.
The Department’s clinical service has expanded 33% with the opening of the new, $990M Sky Tower of the University Health System, our primary teaching facility. This state-of-the-art facility features the latest in operating room design and technology. This, coupled with the diverse patient population and case volume, will prepare our graduates for every clinical situation. The University Health System has also upgraded its ambulatory surgery facilities, and it is in the process of renovating space for expanded pediatrics care. Our secondary teaching facility, the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Administration Hospital, has also undergone extensive operating room renovation. This year, the Joint Commission designated the ALMVAH as a ‘Top Performer with Top Honors in Key Quality Measures”, a distinction shared with only 11 other VA hospitals in the country.
In 2014, we added an endowed professorship to honor our world-renowned pain medicine faculty member, Somayaji Ramamurthy, M.D. This endowment, along with the William H. Hadnott II endowed professorship, will enable us sustain and grow our research and scholarly activities. Current research initiatives include pain studies with capsaicin and ketamine, organ-transplant preservation systems, and novel uses of ultrasound technology.
Please take a few more minutes to review our pages on this website detailing our programs and initiatives.
